Description:

This summer, heat up your poetry with passionate particulars.  Devote a day to exploring the vivid details that authenticate great work.  Where do you draw the line between rich detail that enhances a poem and description that dazzles the writer but not the reader?

We'll explore the multitude of cataloguing, the resonance of descriptive objects, and examine how particulars bring both the personal and the political home to the reader.  Analysis and discussion, interspersed with dynamic exercises, will give hints on when to describe with gusto and when to hold back.

Submit up to two poems for optional critique (one for in-class critique, another returned w/written comments).   Bring a sack lunch.  Together we'll lust after, size up and flirt with the devil in the details until we "bring the devil to his knees."

For more details, contact Angela at ajrydell@wisc.edu.

Thank you all for exploring the dynamic tensions of contrast, and experimenting with new ways to use language and image and idea.  And thanks for taking some photos of me, Dana!  I love your perspective here!

I've learned a lot from you all, and have many inspiring new ideas to ponder as I put together the next class.  Remember, keep me updated on your writing achievements.  You're always welcome to send me an email and let me know how things are going, where you've been submittng, publishing, and doing readings--as well has who you've been reading!--and where the art of writing continues to take you. I'll keep room in the Second Wind Newsletter for you, and hope to see you in a class again soon.

My best,

Angela
